Control Unleashed: Building Confidence, Connection & Trust

For many rescue dogs, the world can feel overwhelming. New people, unfamiliar dogs, strange sounds, and unexpected situations can trigger fear, anxiety, or reactivity. That’s where Control Unleashed can be such a valuable approach.

Created by trainer Leslie McDevitt, Control Unleashed is a training program designed to help dogs learn to stay connected with their person while navigating environments that may be exciting, distracting, or stressful.

What I love about this approach is that the goal isn't simply to control the dog—it's to help the dog develop the skills and confidence to better manage their emotions.

Through positive, pattern-based exercises, dogs can learn to check in with their handler, disengage from triggers, settle, and make better choices. At the same time, their humans learn something equally important: how to recognize what their dog is communicating before they become overwhelmed.

For rescue dogs carrying fear or trauma, that can be incredibly powerful.

With Kane, I've learned that progress isn't about forcing a dog to “get over” their fears. It's about creating experiences where they feel safe enough to learn, building trust one successful moment at a time.

That's exactly the philosophy we believe in at the Canine Comeback Foundation.

We believe behavior is communication—and that dogs struggling with fear or reactivity don't need judgment. They need understanding, appropriate training, patience, and people willing to meet them where they are.

Because sometimes the biggest comeback begins with something very small:

A dog learning, “I'm safe. I can handle this. And my person has my back.”
