Sometimes the biggest milestones are found in the quietest moments. 🐾❤️

One year of patience, trust, and learning that the world doesn't have to be so scary.

A year ago, Kane came into my life carrying more than just the physical scars of his past. He carried fear, uncertainty, and the emotional weight of a life that had not always been kind to him.

Having experienced abuse and trauma, Kane had learned to survive rather than trust. When I adopted him, I knew love and patience would be essential, but I quickly learned that helping him feel truly safe would take much more.

That's where Control Unleashed training became such an important part of our journey.

Building Confidence, One Small Victory at a Time

Control Unleashed, developed by Leslie McDevitt, uses positive reinforcement, predictable pattern games, and choice-based training to help dogs navigate situations that may feel overwhelming.

For Kane, it wasn't about teaching obedience. It was about helping him understand that he had choices, that he could look to me for guidance, and that he didn't have to react to everything around him.

Over the past year, we've celebrated countless small victories. A calmer response to an unfamiliar noise. The ability to disengage from something scary. A moment of checking in with me instead of reacting.

Progress hasn't always been linear, but every small step has helped build something incredibly important.

Trust.

The Transformation I See Today

Some of Kane's greatest accomplishments haven't happened during training. They've happened in the quiet moments at home.

After nearly a year, Kane now chooses to come downstairs and sleep peacefully in my office while I work, stretched out and completely relaxed, with his brother Dino sleeping nearby.

To most people, that's just a dog taking a nap.

To me, it's everything.

This is a dog who once struggled to feel safe and settled, even in his own home. His fear kept him constantly on alert, and when he felt frightened or overwhelmed, it sometimes caused him to react toward my other dogs in the house. It wasn't that Kane didn't want to be part of the family. He simply hadn't learned that he could let his guard down and feel safe in the world around him.

Today, he's less reactive to everyday sounds and movements, more comfortable around the other dogs, genuinely happy when friends visit, and increasingly eager to be included in family life.

He no longer needs constant reassurance. He's learning that he can simply relax and enjoy being a dog.

Training Was Never About Fixing Kane

One of the greatest lessons Kane has taught me is that he was never a dog who needed to be fixed. He was a dog who needed to be understood.

Control Unleashed has given us tools to communicate, build confidence, and work through challenging moments without overwhelming him.

It has also taught me that success isn't always measured by perfect behavior. Sometimes it's a dog recovering more quickly from a frightening experience. Sometimes it's choosing to walk away instead of reacting.

And sometimes, it's simply feeling safe enough to fall into a deep sleep.

Why Kane's Journey Matters

Kane's transformation is the inspiration behind the Canine Comeback Foundation.

We often celebrate the day a dog is rescued or adopted, but for dogs who have experienced trauma, that moment isn't the end of their rescue story.

It's the beginning of their healing journey.

Love is essential, but dogs like Kane often need professional training, patience, consistency, and continued support to truly thrive in their forever homes.

That's why our foundation is dedicated to helping rescued dogs and their families navigate the challenges of post-adoption life, especially those facing fear, anxiety, and reactivity.

One year later, Kane still has fears, and our journey continues. But the dog I see today is more confident, curious, affectionate, and comfortable in his own world.

And along the way, he's taught me just as much as I've taught him.

A year ago, Kane was learning how to survive. Today, he's learning how to simply be a dog.

This is Kane's comeback. And we're just getting started.

Because rescue saves a life. But the right support helps that life truly begin.

Support the Canine Comeback Foundation and help more dogs find their confidence, their happiness, and their second chance.
