One Year Home: A Story of Rescue, Trust & Love
ONE YEAR AGO TODAY, I CHOSE KANE.
One year ago today, I brought home a dog who had every reason in the world not to trust another human.
Kane had been abused, mistreated and hurt.
He carried scars on his body, but the deepest scars were the ones I couldn’t see.
He was scared.
Unsure.
Always waiting for something bad to happen.
That day, I made him a promise:
You will never be hurt again.
You will always be safe.
And I will never give up on you.
The last 365 days haven’t always been easy.
Healing rarely is.
There were moments when progress came in inches instead of miles.
But little by little, day by day, Kane began to believe me.
I watched fear turn into trust.
I watched uncertainty turn into confidence.
I watched a dog who was afraid of the world learn how to love life.
And somewhere along the way…
Kane changed me too.
He became my inspiration and the reason behind the Canine Comeback Foundation.
Because Kane showed me what can happen when a dog is given time, patience, consistency and the chance to feel safe.
Today, when I look at Kane, I don’t see the abused dog I brought home a year ago.
I see a survivor.
I see joy.
I see trust.
I see my best friend.
I see home.
Kane, if I could tell you just one thing today, it would be this:
You were worth every hard day.
Every worry.
Every tear.
Every tiny step forward.
Every moment it took for you to finally understand that you were safe.
I would choose you again.
And again.
And again.
Happy 1-year Gotcha Day, my beautiful boy.
Your past will always be part of your story.
But it will never define you.
And today, as I celebrate the dog Kane has become, I can’t help but think about the dogs who are still waiting.
The scared ones.
The misunderstood ones.
The ones who have been passed over because their story looks a little harder.
Kane was once one of those dogs.
Someone could have looked at his past and decided he was too damaged.
Too difficult.
Too much work.
I looked at him and saw a dog worth fighting for.
One year later, I know something with absolute certainty:
The dogs who have been through the worst can still become something extraordinary when someone finally gives them the chance.
That is why Kane’s story matters.
That is why the Canine Comeback Foundation exists.
And that is why I will keep fighting for the dogs who can’t fight for themselves.
Because somewhere tonight, there is another Kane sitting behind a shelter door…
waiting for someone to believe that his story isn’t over yet.
Kane got his comeback.
Now it’s our job to help the next one get theirs.
